Humanitarian crisis in Venezuela

Venezuela’s situation is deteriorating quickly. Hundreds and thousands of people are fleeing the country daily. ‘I don’t think the world realises how serious the situation is. This could turn out to be a catastrophe of unprecedented size for the western hemisphere.’ is what David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Program states.

The world seems to be looking the other way, while the humanitarian disaster grows out of proportion. Most media outlets fled the country and the propaganda machine is working at it’s best. It’s time to make a change, and for that I need your help.

Since 2014 I’ve been working in Venezuela a couple of times. The last time was between May and December 2018. I know the country, I know the way  around and I’ve got my contacts. In the last couple of years I reported on the situation over there for a number of newspapers, magazines and radio stations.

What can you do?

Do you want to do something meaningful for the Venezuelans, then the first step is to show the world what is happening in Venezuela. The larger the number of  people that know what’s happening, the more political pressure there will be to address the situation.

With the first thing, I can help. Send me to Venezuela and let me tell you and as many people as possible what’s happening as an independent journalist. If you send me to Venezuela, you can expect daily updates and well-researched items from all corners of the country. I will keep you involved in everything I do and you can make suggestions on items you think are important. The fact that traditional media look the other way, doesn’t mean we have to do so as well.

What do you need?

Reporting from Venezuela, unfortunately isn’t free. I will need to travel and it isn’t always safe there for a westerner, so I need to take that into consideration too. Ofcourse me and the people in my group need to sleep and eat from time to time. Below you will find a short summary of the costs. The first number are structural expenses, the other number is what I need each week, if you want me to stay longer. The more support I get, the longer I can work.

Helping is simple

If I don’t make the minimum I need you will get your money back, minus 1 euro for administration fees. If I am able to go to Venezuela and sell an article to a commercial party I will invest 100% of the money in reporting from Venezuela. Do we have a deal? Thank you!
